MEET THE WOMEN OF ROOTED BIRTH

Midwife

CAREY GLENN, CPM, LM

I am a mother, midwife, educator, body worker, community herbalist, and rhythmic therapist. I seek to weave these passions together by creating unique offerings for my intimate community of clients and the wider world through online trainings, speaking events + film screenings. In addition to using my own birth experiences to deepen my understanding and empathy for birthing and postpartum mothers, I am grateful to have happily nursed my babies for a total of 6 years as well as counseled many other nursing mothers through simple and complex breastfeeding concerns. I continue to deepen my study and understanding of lactation as a part of my services for women.

I was featured as the unobtrusive and hands-off midwife in the film These Are My Hours, and now work behind the scenes as a co-producer and eduational and outreach coordinator.

I work as a musician and co-director of Sacred Heart Beats, an improvisational drumming group that also practices as a service organization. We perform in team building experiences, share in mindful communication drum circles in school settings, and connect individuals with complex or special needs to community drum circles. We train facilitators in our method of facilitation. We will release a recording of labor and birth inspired percussion pieces in 2023.

I am supported by my partner and best friend, Scott, and our beautiful blended family of five children. I am eternally grateful for the support of my mom and dad and extended family for knitting together life when I am away.

MAKAYLA COLE, CPM, LM

Backup Midwife

My passion is in helping families feel empowered. Our bodies and birth are so beautifully designed and I am honored to be a space holder in the sacred space of birth. I believe in full autonomy and families making fully informed decisions about all aspects of their care. My role is to provide resources, information and to support you during your journey.

I have 3 children of my own and am married to my best friend, Nate. We spend our free time on our homestead where we garden, homeschool and try to fill each day with exploring, learning and being together. My personal hobbies include sewing, reading and drinking coffee!

I am also the owner and midwife of my personal midwifery practice, Barefoot Birth.

KAYLIN SMITH, LMA

Licensed Midwife Apprentice

I am a mother, student of birth, plant lover and budding body worker. I love all things natural and community oriented, and that encompasses my love and passion for birth work. I believe mothers possess an innate knowledge to do what is right for themselves and their babies. I have been working intimately with families for the last 15 years. I find joy in observing the growth and unfolding that occurs as families expand. By providing information, resources, and support during pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period, I am able to give to my community in a way that feels authentic to me.

When I am not working, you will find me making tallow products, perusing the forest for mushrooms and herbs, or in my rabbit barn and garden playing with my one and only daughter. I am supported by my amazing husband, Matthew, and his sweet family that we live in community with.

ASHLEY MAKAN, LMA

Licensed Midwife Apprentice

I’m a Prenatal and Perinatal Educator, Doula of nearly six years, and an herbalism and plant enthusiast. I’m also a Body Ready Method® Pro, Reiki Master, and Meditation Guide, with a focus on trauma-informed birth preparation and holistic self-care for both parents and birth professionals.

My heart is deeply invested in preconception work, creating trauma-sensitive communities, and honoring the powerful mind-body connection, especially in physiological birth. Through my work with APPPAH, I’m committed to raising awareness about how crucial Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology is in transforming the way we approach birth. I believe peace on Earth begins with birth—and when our autonomy is honored, our voices are heard, and our bodies and hearts are fully supported, we can stand in our power and truly thrive.

When I’m not working or immersed in learning, you’ll likely find me in my garden or wandering through the woods with my daughter. I love deepening my meditation practice, expanding my somatic awareness, and getting lost in a book. It’s how I recharge and stay inspired for the work I love. I’m incredibly grateful for the devoted support of my family, who grounds and sustains me on this journey.
